Note: US presidential candidate of Socialist Party of America, Eugene V. Debs, was America’s most prominent socialist; running for the Presidency of the United States, under the banner of the Socialist Party five times in 1900, 1904, 1908, 1912, and 1920 - the last, ran entirely from his prison cell in Atlanta, Georgia – imprisoned on the grounds of “treason” for speaking out against American involvement in World War I. Debs sought the Presidency of the United States a fifth time from his prison cell in Atlanta, Georgia. Though allowed only one press release per week, Debs still received 913,693 votes. He would be released, but not pardoned in 1921. Debs was admitted to an Illinois sanatorium and died months later on October 26, 1926 of heart failure.
